Recently, due to travels, etc., I've had to resort to using my cellphone to listen to archive Dead. I always pack the best headphones I can afford at home or on the road, but, to my astonishment, I swear my earlier generation Samsung phone produces a cleaner sound than just about any other equipment (again, I'm almost exclusively a headphone wearer).
As an added bonus, regardless of the tape, Weir always seems to be thrown dead front and center with a marked increase in volume. As a big Weir fan who often has trouble picking him out in many recordings, this is quite a gift.

My two home stereos are fairly respectable, not exactly McIntosh and Meyers, but they don't sound near as good out the headphone jack (although, obviously, they amplify more).

Anyone else notice anything remotely like this?

What phone and headphones? Any special app to process / listen to audio? I'm a complete cell phone novice.

just roll up the windows and turn on the phone

if you got decent data plan (me, I'm unlimited), then just use your phonr to get to the internet. Then google of IA/GD/Collections -- and voila! Tom's your uncle!

Later you will find out how to use google store or android store and you can get a kazillion free grateful dead apps, like Grateful Dead Radio, from a website called Jango.

Not sure I care about 'the plan' as I will be keeping the phone in airplane / off mode except when I need to communicate. I'm very not down with that whole 'I don't think microwave radiation is harmful, so it couldn't possibly harm me' perspective. I know too many people whose live have been seriously altered for the worse because of it. But I'm moving and may not be able to secure a landline in my next place. Plus I'll text.

Audio will be an on-device storage thing for me, like an mp3 (quelle horreur) player.

Ignorance and Denial is a good place to watch, listen and read about the harms and risks of 24/7 microwave radiation, up to one quintillion times the natural cosmic background levels we evolved in.

Or maybe you'll just be fine, keep your iPhone close.

In that case...

Get a Google Chromecast doo dah at Best Buy for $30 or Apple Equivlent, and listen to your phone on your TV and speakers.

Will you be off the grid?

Nope, I'm good with the grid, just don't like wireless things.

MzLiz, Jango is still around? We used to stream Jango at work then we switched to Grooveshark. Then our IT department blocked all access to anything fun. Killjoys...

If you ever want a good laugh, ( and children are not present ), look up " Katie Tropp " on Jango. She works at Kinko's by day, but at night transforms into a gnarly hardcore gangster rapper. It's awesome and horrible all at once.

Speaking of freakishly good sound quality (and video), the person who recorded this Jeff Tweedy nugget did so with an iPhone 6! I must say, if this is correct, I am suitably impressed. Steady hand, too!

What now? Woz going on....whoops, shit, accidentally posted to http://archive.org/gratefuldead/gayfan.......*
My bad! Reposting to http://archive.org.gratefuldead/technical_details

*(Not that there's anything wrong with that).

Strange feeling listening to the Dead since '72 and hearing Bob's sound slowly vanish over the years as Healy unilaterally decides Weir shouldn't be a recorded member of the band.
